Kite Trip to Vella Island Kalpitiya – Sri Lanka
Since I landed in Sri Lanka for my kitesurfing holiday, I was really eager to make a kite trip to Vella Island kitesurfing spot. I have many friends who have visited Sri Lanka before, for kitesurfing and all of them told me that Vella Island is the best kite spot in Sri Lanka and probably one of the best spots in the world. That’s why I decided to organise a kite trip to Sri Lanka and go see Vella Island for myself.
In order to get to Vella Island kite spot, I had to organise a kite trip from Kalpitiya. The village of Kalpitiya is approximately 300 km north of Colombo and it is located at the end of the Kalpitiya peninsula. In Kalpitiya there are many resorts who organize kite trips to Vella Island and other kitesurfing spots.
A normal price for a kite trip to Vella Island is around 45 euros, including lunch and drinks. The boats to Vella Island leave from Kalpitiya lagoon and it takes around 50 minutes. These boats are typical fishermen boats that take up to 6 people and they are quite comfortable.
We left Kalpitiya lagoon at 9:30 a.m. and at around 10:30 a.m. we were already pumping our kites in Vella. My kitesurfing trip to Vella island is one of the best kitesurfing experiences I have had in my life. I counted maximum 20 kites that day and the island is super long, so we had plenty of space for everybody. The wind in Vella Island is offshore and I saw some beginners struggling to get back to the island, by edging a lot. I also saw some boats who had to rescue the kiters who not able to get back. This kite spot in Sri Lanka is for sure not recommendable for people who are not able to kite upwind.
We were told by the resort that we could stay at Vella Island only until 4 p.m., as the way back to Kalpitiya takes longer because of the waves. Finally, we left the island at 4:30 p.m. and we got to Kalpitiya around 5 p.m. It is true, the way back from Vella Island is quite challenging as there are many waves, but I think it is worthy to go to Vella.
I saw some kite surfers who spent the night on Vella Island. There are no hotels there, only some fishermen huts who provide basic food and water. There is no electricity either, so they had to use torches at sundown. I cannot imagine how amazing it would be to wake up in ‘kitesurfing paradise’ and be able to kite as soon as the sun rises.
Now I know why Vella Island in Sri Lanka is considered the best kite spot around and one of the best kitesurfing spots in the world.
